Campaigning and Volunteering
Canvassing is simply knocking on people’s doors and talking to them. Canvassing can take place year-round but is usually significantly increased during election time. Wrap up warm, or bring your sunscreen, wear comfortable footwear and bring a notepad and pen. Canvassing is a sociable occasion; members go out in groups and pair up.
The aim of canvassing usually is to establish ‘voter intention’, in other words whether the voter is intending to vote Labour, or not. It may also be to find out what issues are important to residents in a specific area. Canvassing is one of the most important things you can do, with members of the public often saying that speaking to Labour Party members has made a difference to them.
Come along, you will be teamed up with another party member until you feel confident enough to knock on your own. And don’t worry, you are not expected to be an expert on party policy or position. More experienced members are always on hand for the rare instances where you might be asked a question you cannot answer.
Whatever the conversation you have, always leave the person you spoke to with a positive friendly and polite impression.
