End holiday hunger in Bolton
Mark Logan MP, the Conservative MP for Bolton North East was one of over 300 Conservative MPs who refused to protect hungry children during school holidays. In reaction to the recent Parliamentary vote to not extend the free school meals scheme, many councils across the country have backed the #ENDCHILDFOODPOVERTY campaign led by Marcus Rashford.
After much pressure this now includes Bolton council. What this means is that the government has essentially passed the costs onto local government. Tory led Bolton Council is already looking at £40m cuts to public services this year and this will give them yet another excuse to do so.
According to the End Child Poverty Coalition, 43.5% children in Bolton North East live in poverty. This is nearly 9,000 children after housing costs in 2018-2019. This is before this pandemic plunged even more people into hardship.
We, the undersigned, oppose this attack on the vulnerable and demand the government provide free school meals for those children eligible over the holidays, rather than leave it to already overstretched councils.
